Saving energy and money with smart meters

A smart meter can help you reduce your energy use and save money. It allows you to keep track of how much gas and electricity you’re using and see what you’re spending in real time. It automatically sends regular readings to your supplier, which means you don’t need to remember to send meter readings to your supplier. Your bills will always be accurate too.

How do smart meters work?

A smart meter has an in-home display and uses a secure data network to automatically send meter readings to your supplier at least once a month.

Your in-home display shows you how much energy you’re using and what it’s costing you. You can use this to help find what items are using the most energy by turning off appliances and looking at the display to see the running cost of what’s left switched on. You can also check to see if you’re using lots of energy overnight, when most things should be turned off or using very little energy.

How do I get a smart meter?

You just need to get in touch with your energy supplier. They’ll make an appointment to install the meter which, in most cases, will take about 90 minutes. There’s no upfront charge for the installation, and some energy suppliers may offer incentives or rewards for doing so. If you’re a tenant, you don’t need your landlord’s permission to get a smart meter installed, which makes them a great way to save money if you rent your home.
